1. I will plan future staffing needs
If you’re used to flying by the seat of your pants when it comes to hiring, discover the benefits of having an HR Plan for the year (or even the next 5 years!).
2. I will give timely feedback
Tell people how they’re doing as it happens. This will have a much greater impact than waiting until their “formal” evaluation in 6 months from now.
3. I will reward key staff
Make sure that your “keepers” know how much you appreciate them by doing something special, whether it’s in the form of compensation or non-monetary recognition.
4. I will not ignore weak staff
Address issues today by giving concrete feedback, setting clear expectations, or if necessary through appropriate disciplinary measures.
5. I will provide proper training
Take a few minutes to prepare a training plan for a new hire or an employee changing positions and allocate the time and resources needed to get the job done properly.
6. I will mentor star employees
Start grooming your high potential employees today by introducing them to clients, teaching them new skills, or by sharing your experience.
7. I will prepare interview questions
During your last interview if you asked something like “If I open the fridge, what food item would you be?” then you may need to rethink your interview techniques. Ask questions where candidates have to provide information on how they reacted in the past such as “Give me an example of a time you resolved an issue with a client”.
8. I will spread team spirit and positivity
No matter your position, always make sure to show your colleagues your best side – that you enjoy your job and are happy. Good humour is contagious!
9. I will communicate future business plans
Employees can’t read your mind, share your thoughts, ideas and plans, and see how fast they jump on board!
10. I will encourage employee initiative and ideas
Often the people who can identify areas for improvement are those on the field, not those in the boardroom!
