Because you have to start somewhere! Here are some simple, concrete and inexpensive gestures that you can put in place in 2016 to create a health & safety culture within your company.
1. Perform periodic preventative visits of your work areas
This will permit you to collaborate with the workers and managers, who know their work environment the best, in order to identify workplace risks. This is an efficient way to eliminate or control risks before an accident even occurs.
2. Make a standard form available to declare accidents and incidents
This allows you to meet your legal obligation of having a register of accidents and near-misses which may occur in your workplace. It will also give you an overview of the circumstances surrounding any accidents or incidents in order to identify trouble areas.
3. Perform an investigation and analysis of any workplace accidents or incidents
Understand the cause of the accident and identify the risk in order to take the necessary corrective measures to ensure that it does not reoccur.
4. Put in place a return to work program
This permits the employee who has been victim of a workplace accident to gradually regain his/her full work capacity by performing tasks adapted to his/her temporary limitations. This helps promote a rapid and durable return to work.
5. Put in place or update your prevention program
Mandatory in certain industries, this allows you to document, manage and follow-up on all of the preventative measures put in place in order to meet the company’s legal obligations, as well as any regulations or health & safety standards that your company may be subject to.
6. Adopt safe behaviour, at all times, and within all levels of the organization
Workplace health & safety is everyone’s business. Security measures such as wearing protective equipment should be respected by all, at all times. A manager who ensures that the rules are followed while following them himself will have a much greater impact. It is a question of credibility.
7. Ensure that the company is compliant with all applicable standards, regulations and laws
Get the New Year off to a good start by reviewing the various obligations applicable to your company’s sector of activity, verify whether you are compliant and confirm that the necessary safeguards are in place. If adjustments are needed, put an action plan in place so that the necessary measures are taken by the end of 2016.
8. As a member of Senior Management, show that health & safety is important to you
The commitment and support of senior management will have a major impact on the success of the implementation and maintenance of a health & safety culture within your organization. Without this it will be difficult to attain employee engagement and arrive at the desired outcome.
